Alternate & Alternative (Explained in Hindi)
ALTERNATE = बारी-बारी से घटित होना (पहले एक बात का, फिर दूसरे वाली बात का, और फिर पहले वाली बात का; जैसे
a) The government has banned private cars from the city on alternate days.
b) Our local football team plays at home on alternate Saturdays.
ALTERNATIVE = कोई alternative plan एक ऐसा plan होता है जो हम use में ला सकते हैं यदि हम वास्तविक plan को use में लाने के लिए असमर्थ होते हैं; जैसे
As the road is under repairs, you are advised to use an alternative route.
INCORRECT: We decided to make alternate arrangements in case the hotel was fully booked.
CORRECT: We decided to make alternative arrangements in case the hotel was fully booked.
NOTE: Alternate की adverb Alternately होती है, और Alternative की adverb Alternatively होती है. इनके अर्थ वही होते हैं जो ALTERNATE और ALTERNATIVELY के होते हैं; जैसे
a) The play is alternately sad and happy.
b) I thought we’d stay at home. Alternatively, you might like to go for a walk.
INCORRECT: Both my wife and I stay at home alternatively to look after our children.
CORRECT: Both my wife and I stay at home alternately to look after our children.
ARRIVAL/ARRIVE (Explained in Hindi)
1. किसी के कहीं पहुँचने पर ‘on/upon sb’s arrival’ कहा जाता है, ‘at sb’s arrival’ नहीं; जैसे
INCORRECT: At my arrival in Mumbai, I was surprised not to find you.
CORRECT: On my arrival in Mumbai, I was surprised not to find you.
2. किसी country, city, आदि पहुँचने के लिए ARRIVE/ARRIVAL IN use किया जता है; जैसे
He’ll be arriving in Delhi for the seminar.
INCORRECT: I’ll arrive to Jaipur at one in the morning.
CORRECT: I’ll arrive in Jaipur at one in the morning.
INCORRECT: When the train arrived at Delhi, I had reached there.
CORRECT: When the train arrived in Delhi, I had reached there.
3. किसी building, station, airport, आदि पर पहुँचने के लिए ARRIVE/ARRIVAL AT use किया जाता है; जैसे
Make sure you arrive at the station in time.
INCORRECT: We had arrived the station just in time.
CORRECT: We had arrived at the station just in time.
INCORRECT: Make sure you arrive to the hotel in time for dinner.
CORRECT: Make sure you arrive at the hotel in time for dinner.
NOTE: अकेले HOME के लिए AT/TO का use नहीं किया जाता , HOME के साथ preposition TO का use होता है जब इसके पहले किसी adjective का use किया गया हो; जैसे
a) We arrived home at six o’clock.
b) Let’s go home and have something to eat.
c) We arrived at their house at six o’clock. (THERE is an adjective before HOME here)
INCORRECT: As soon as I arrived at home, my parents started to scold me.
CORRECT: As soon as I arrived home, my parents started to scold me.
INCORRECT: After the exams, I’m going to home.
CORRECT: After the exams, I’m going home.

ALTERNATE = happening in turn (first one thing, then another thing, and then the first thing again); e.g.
a) The government has banned private cars from the city on alternate days.
b) Our local football team plays at home on alternate Saturdays.
ALTERNATIVE = an alternate plan or method is one that you can use if you do not want to use another one; e.g.
As the road is under repairs, you are advised to use an alternative route.
INCORRECT: We decided to make alternate arrangements in case the hotel was fully booked.
CORRECT: We decided to make alternative arrangements in case the hotel was fully booked.
NOTE: Adverb of ALTERNATE is ALTERNATELY, and adverb of ALTERNATIVE is ALTERNATIVELY. Their meanings are same as of ALTERNATE and ALTERNATIVELY are; e.g.
a) The play is alternately sad and happy.
b) I thought we’d stay at home. Alternatively, you might like to go for a walk.
INCORRECT: Both my wife and I stay at home alternatively to look after our children.
CORRECT: Both my wife and I stay at home alternately to look after our children.
ARRIVAL/ARRIVE (Explained in English)
1. We say ‘on/upon sb’s arrival’, not ‘at sb’d arrival’; e.g.
INCORRECT: At my arrival in Mumbai, I was surprised not to find you.
CORRECT: On my arrival in Mumbai, I was surprised not to find you.
2. When it’s a country, city, etc. we say ARRIVE/ARRIVAL IN; e.g.
He’ll be arriving in Delhi for the seminar.
INCORRECT: I’ll arrive to Jaipur at one in the morning.
CORRECT: I’ll arrive in Jaipur at one in the morning.
INCORRECT: When the train arrived at Delhi, I had reached there.
CORRECT: When the train arrived in Delhi, I had reached there.
