1. Athletic & Athletics (Explained in Hindi)
Athletic = शारीरिक रूप से शक्तिशाली और दौड़ने, कूदने, आदि में बेहतरीन (physically strong and good at running, jumping, etc.); जैसे
He is very good athletic.
Athletics = दौड़, कूद, भाला फेंक आदि जैसे खेल (sports such as running, jumping , and throwing the javelin); जैसे
He’s been very good at athletics.
INCORRECT: There is no dearth of athletic in China.
CORRECT: There is no dearth of athletics in China.
INCORRECT: The race was organized by the National Athletic Association.
CORRECT: The race was organized by the National Athletics Association.
2. Authority & Authorities (Explained in Hindi)
A) AUTHORITY का अर्थ जब नैतिक/वैधानिक अधिकार (moral/legal right) अथवा किसी बात को नियंत्रण करने की योग्यता (ability to control) होता है तो यह एक uncountable noun होती है, और इसको इसलिए singular form में use किया जाता है; जैसे
i) They are building their house without authority from the department.
ii) The lawyer has my complete authority to act on my behalf.
iii) Parents must have authority over (= ability to control) their children.
iv) A good teacher has an easy authority over a class.
B) AUTHORITY का अर्थ जब व्यक्तियों का ऐसा समूह होता है जिसके पास किसी गतिविधि को पूरा कराने का औपचारिक अधिकारक्षेत्र होता है (a group of people with official responsibility for a particular area of activity) तो यह एक countable noun होती है, और इसलिए इसको आवश्यकता के अनुसार singular form में भी use किया जा सकता है और plural form में भी; जैसे
i) You should ask about this from your local authority.
ii) Health authorities issued a worldwide alert.
iii) I have a problem with authority in general and with government in particular.
iv) I note that the local police authority is necessary before you start such activities.
v) The city health authorities are trying hard to get rid of dengue mosquitoes.
C) AUTHORITY का अर्थ जब व्यक्तियों का ऐसा समूह होता है जिसके पास किसी बात का निर्णय लेने अथवा किसी क्षेत्र विशेष में लोगों के द्वारा क़ानून का पालन कराने जैसे पुलिस अथवा स्थनीय सरकारी विभाग द्वारा, की वैधानिक power होती है तो हम ‘THE AUTHORITIES’ का प्रयोग करते हैं; जैसे
INCORRECT: Those who bend the rules are reported to the authority.
CORRECT: Those who bend the rules are reported to the authorities.
INCORRECT: The authority had refused them even their basic civil rights.
CORRECT: The authorities had refused them even their basic civil rights.

a) When AUTHORITY means the moral or legal right or ability to control, it’s an uncountable noun and therefore we use it in the singular only; e.g.

b) When AUTHORITY means a group of people with official responsibility for a particular area of activity, it’s a countable noun and therefore we can use it both in the singular and plural depending on the need; e.g.

c) When AUTHORITY means the group of people with official legal power to make decisions or make people obey the laws in a particular area, such as the police or a local government department, we say THE AUTHORITIES; e.g.
INCORRECT: Those who bend the rules are reported to the authority.
CORRECT: Those who bend the rules are reported to the authorities.
INCORRECT: The authority had refused them even their basic civil rights.
CORRECT: The authorities had refused them even their basic civil rights.
