PASSAGE
There is a time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried. Not for nothing one face, one character, one fact, makes much impression on him, and another none. This sculpture in the memory is not without pre-established harmony. The eye was placed where one ray should fall, that it might testify of that particular ray. We but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents. It may be safely trusted as proportionate and of good issues, so it be faithfully imparted, but God will not have his work made manifest by cowards. A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and has done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace. It is a deliverance which does not deliver. In the attempt his genius deserts him; no muse befriends; no invention, no hope.

SOLUTION WITH EXPLANATION (By MAHA GUPTA)

76. Option ‘4’ (FAULTLESS)

77. Option ‘3’ (APPROVAL)

78. Option ‘3’ (Hierarchy)

79. Remove INTO from part ‘C’. When INTO means to come or go into a particular place, we do not use any preposition with it: ‘The police entered the building through/by the side door.’ ‘You will begin to feel sleepy as the drug enters the bloodstream.’ ENTER INTO = to start to become involved in something, especially a discussion or agreement: ‘They refuse to enter into any discussion on this matter.’

80. NO ERROR. TURN UP = to arrive or appear somewhere: ‘Do you think many people will turn up?’ ‘She turned up at my house late one night.’

81. Replace ALPHABETS by ALPHABET in part ‘B’. ALPHABET = a set of letters arranged in a fixed order, used for writing a language: ‘Z comes after Y in the alphabet.’ ‘The ninth letter of the alphabet is I.’

It’s ALPHABET (not ALPHABETS).

82. Option ‘1’ (WIPED). WIPE OUT = To destroy completely. Hindi Translation: Ek gande kaam se hi usne apne sabhi achchhe kaamo ko dho daala.

83. Option ‘2’ (OF). CONSCIOUS OF = having knowledge of something. ‘We are conscious of the extent of the problem. BREAK IN VOICE = voice full of emotions. Hindi translation: Mujhe ptaa thaa ki main bhaawook ho jaata hoon.

84. Option ‘2’ (DOWN). BREAK DOWN = to be unable to control your feelings and to start to cry: ‘
When we gave her the bad news, she broke down and cried.’

85. Option ‘2’ (Far from reality)

86. Option ‘4’ (Slowly). SNAIL = a small creature with a soft, wet body and a round shell, that moves very slowly and often eats garden plants

87. Option ‘3’ (Pay a visit)

88. Option ‘4’ (Compositor)

89. Option ‘4’ (Peninsula)

90. Option ‘1’ (Soporific)

91. Option ‘3’ (the setting sun glimmer). You can’t use THE SUNSET GLIMMERS as SUNSET is the time in the evening when the sun disappears or daylight fades: ‘Sunset was still a couple of hours away.’

But here we need a word describing (adjective) the sun, Therefore SETTING SUN is correct. Also, you see the main word of the subject of the sentence is RAYS; so the verb must not be in the singular form. In the given answer option ‘1’ the verb is GLIMMERS, means singular.

92. Option ‘2’ (lend me a few rupees). FEW is a negative word and it denotes scarcity or lack and have the force of a negative. A FEW is a positive term and it denotes a small NUMBER, or what the speaker considers a small number. Therefore A FEW is correct here. To understand the use of FEW/A FEW see it:

93. Option ‘1’ (the colder). The comparative degree of COLD is COLDER, not MORE COLD. Secondly the sentence is a case of parallel increase of a quality. In parallel increase we use the article THE before the comparative degree. So it will be THE COLDER (not COLDER). To understand this more, see 2 (11) here:

94. No improvement

95. Option ‘1’ (bent upon). BENT ON/UPON SOMETHING = determined to do something: ‘He was bent on quitting that job even though he was making a lot of money.’ Hindi translation: Wah hamla karne waale se badla lene ke liye nishchyee (determined) hai.

96. Option ‘3’ (Working hard and sincerely)

97. Option ‘2’ (When he has put his heart into his work and has done his best.)

98. Option ‘1’ (Cowards)

99. Option ‘3’ (The power which resides in him)

100. Option ‘1’ (Display)
