Answer Key

1. B 2. C 3. A 4. A 5. B

Solution with explanation

1. Option ‘B’ (extensive). EXTENSIVE = covering a large area; having a great range; e.g.

The body was found after an extensive search by police with tracker dogs.

2. Option ‘C’ (opening). EXTENSIVE NETWORK OF NARROW STREETS AMID MULTI-STORY WOODED HOUSES is the subject of the sentence, and its verb is MAKES, so OPEN (option ‘A’) can’t be our choice. Secondly our real subject (NETWORK) is in the singular, therefore it needs to be OPENS (not OPEN). Here we need a participle (adjective). The form of a participle is the ING FORM, hence OPENING is correct.

NOTE: WOODED = covered with trees; e.g.

The police found a vital clue to the girl’s disappearance in a wooded area near her home.

3. Option ‘A’ (urban). URBAN = characteristic of a town or city

4. Option ‘A’ (in). IN THE QUEST OF = seeking or trying to find something; e.g.

They went into town in quest of a reasonably priced restaurant.
