INCOME TAX INSPECTOR (ITI) JOB PROFILE

Selection to the post of Income Tax Inspector (ITI) in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is made through the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).

In the 6th CPC he was entitled for the Grade Pay of Rs 4,600. Now in the 7th CPC he is entitled for the Basic Pay Rs 44,900 and comes under the level 7 of the following Pay Matrix Table.

In addition to the salary Income Tax Inspector (ITI) is entitled for 30 liter of petrol per month. He also gets a MTNL/BSNL sim from the department on which all STD calls on every type of BSNL/MTNL phone are free; and 400 minutes on other phones whether STD or LOCAL are free for every month. This sim is provided to every ITI irrespective of the seat he is posted at. And gets 3GB 1 GB free use of data on internet.

JOB NATURE OF INCOME TAX INSPECTOR (ITI)

Income Tax Inspector (ITI) can generally be posted at either of the two types of seats which generally are transferable on cyclic basis; they are:

ASSESSMENT OF TAX
When on an assessment seat he is supposed to see the work related to assessment of income tax to be imposed on an individual, partnership firm, company etc; and refund of it in case someone has deposited in excess. He also has to see the work related to TAX DEDUCTION AT SOURCE (TDS) besides being accompanying a raid team.

NON-ASSESSMENT OF TAX
ITI on non-assessment seat generally has to do clerical/file work though he too could be asked to accompany a raid team. If posted in an Investigation Wing an ITI is supposed to do enquiry, collect certain information.

This is a job without uniform.

 

PROMOTIONS FOR INCOME TAX INSPECTOR (ITI)

  3. Deputy Commissioner
  4. Joint Commissioner
  5. Addl. Commissioner
  6. Commissioner

The second best post of CGL after EXAMINER promotion-wise.

To be eligible for promotion to the post of ITO (Group-B Gazetted) ITI has to pass the departmental exam; but this exam is just for ELIGIBILITY; promotion is on the basis of SENIORITY only, which differs from zone to zone. After promotion to the post of Assistant Commissioner the transfer becomes ALL INDIA LIABILITY. Before that the department can transfer him within the zone only unless he himself is interested in the inter-zonal transfer.

Average time for next promotion is around 5-6 years roughly. After ITO , you become Assistant Commissioner after 10-12 years. Then after every 4 years you get a promotion. Practically a directly recruit ITI doesn’t get promotion to the post of Commissioner.

TRAINING FOR INCOME TAX INSPECTOR (ITI)

ITI also has to undergo a training which runs for 3 months. During the training period he is entitled for certain allowances in addition to the full amount of salary.

AGE LIMIT
The upper age limit for the post of Income Tax Inspector in the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam of the Staff Selection Commission  is 30 years.

NOTE-I: There is no physical test for this post. Colourblind people can apply for this.

NOTE-II: It being a Group-C poste, a central govt employees servicing for 3 years continuously can take the exam for this post up to 40 years. For reserved categories add to it the usual age relaxation available to them.
