‘Less’ word ‘Little’ की एक comparative degree है; जिसका अर्थ है ‘किसी चीज की कम मात्रा’. ‘Lesser’ भी word ‘Little’ की एक comparative degree है; परन्तु इसका अर्थ है ‘और किसी की तुलना में कम महत्त्व का, घटिया quality का, छोटे साइज़ का, कम ताकत का, आदि. इन शब्दों के अर्थ में अंतर के कारण ये दोनों शब्द समानार्थी (synonyms) नहीं हैं और इसलिए इनका use एक ही उद्देश्य से नहीं किया जाता; जैसे
INCORRECT: I think you should eat lesser junk food.
CORRECT: I think you should eat less junk food.
[यहाँ पर junk food को खाए जाने की मात्रा (quantity) की बात की जा रही है; अर्थात किसी भी व्यक्ति को junk food की km मात्रा खानी चाहिए अन्यथा वो बीमार हो जाएगा. वस्तुओं की मात्रा के लिए शब्द LESS का use किया जाता है; अतः यहाँ शब्द LESSER का use अशुद्ध है.]
INCORRECT: A less writer would not have been able to create such a fantastic story.
CORRECT: A lesser writer would not have been able to create such a fantastic story.
[यहाँ हम एक ऐसे writer की बात कर रहे हैं जो लिखने में इतना बढ़िया नहीं है. इसका अर्थ है कि हम यहाँ किसी की मात्रा (quantity) की बात नहीं कर रहे हैं. इसलिए यहाँ शब्द LESS का use अशुद्ध है.]

1. I have less hair than Rajesh, so her haircut wouldn’t look good on me.
2. Ritesh has less room in her apartment now and is selling a few things.
3. You need to find a less hectic job, as soon as possible.
4. Congratulations, you have less than a week to go before you graduate!
5. Ruchika arrived less than 5 minutes after me today.
LESSER
1. Rahul will be affected to a lesser extent than her sister because of this new decision.
2. The company would start paying lesser wages for recruits.
3. The first movie is the lesser of the two, in my opinion.
4. Sachin doesn’t know what he’s doing. The lesser he speaks at the meeting, the better.
Less Vs Lesser EXPLAINED IN ENGLISH
‘Less’ is a comparative degree of the word ‘Little’, which means a smaller amount or quantity. ‘Lesser’ is also a comparative degree of the word ‘Little’, but it means things that are inferior or smaller in importance. Because of the difference in their meaning, these words aren’t synonyms and therefore aren’t used for the same purpose; e.g.
INCORRECT: I think you should eat lesser junk food.
CORRECT: I think you should eat less junk food.
[Here, about the quantity of eating junk food is being talked about; means one should not eat much junk food otherwise one can fall ill. For quantities we use LESS; therefore using of LESSER is incorrect here.]
INCORRECT: A less writer would not have been able to create such a fantastic story.
CORRECT: A lesser writer would not have been able to create such a fantastic story.
[Here, we are talking about a writer who is not that good in writing. It means we are not talking about a quantity here. Therefore using of the word LESS would be incorrect here.]
