1. I am asking her to go to sleep.

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’ (She is being asked to go to sleep by me.). Here the structure is Subject + Verb + Object + Infinitive where the subject is I, the verb is AM ASKING, the object is HER, and the infinitive is TO GO. In this structure they are verbs of COMMAND, ASK, REQUEST, ADVICE, INVITATION, etc.

When sentences of this structure are converted into the passive, the object of the verb is taken as the subject of the passive sentence and the verb is converted into the passive. The infinitive is kept as it is; e.g.

a) He invited me to go.
=I was invited to go.

b) My boss gave me a journal to read.
= I was given a journal to read by my boss.
= A journal was given to me to read by my boss.

2. Whom have you helped during the journey?

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (Who has been helped by you during the journey?). The given sentence is in the active voice where WHOM is the object. When we change the voice the object becomes the subject; the subjective form of WHOM is WHO. Option ‘C’ is rejected because we need the Present Perfect Tense, not the Past Perfect Tense.

3. Somebody built this house in 2001.

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’ (This house was built in 2001.). SOMEBODY is a vague subject, it’s not necessary to mention in the passive voice.

4. They had to scrap all the rules to accommodate a particular person.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (All the rules had to be scrapped to accommodate a particular person.). HAVE TO (here HAD TO) is a modal verb, so its passive will be HAD TO BE SCRAPPED.

5. The parents’ love should not be taken for granted.

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’ (One should not take parents’ love for granted.). The given sentence is in the passive voice. When we convert sentences into the Active Voice, it’s necessary to find the subject of the sentence in the Active Voice, For this we need to find the object in BY-PHRASE of the Passive Voice. But we are not given the BY-PHRASE; it means the object in it is vague.

For vague subjects we use PEOPLE, YOU, WE, THEY, ONE, SOMEONE, etc. Words like THEY, SOMEONE as vague subjects are used for limited number of persons; but here you see the point given in the passive voice is for every person, not for limited number of persons. So our subject in the active voice will be any of ONE, YOU, WE, PEOPLE.

6. Did anyone invite Rachna to the party?

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’ (Was Rachna invited to the party?). We know the tense does not change while changing the voice. The tense of the given sentence is the Past Simple Tense (DID INVITE). But as we know the verb form of the passive voice is BE + V3; so we need to convert DID into a form of BE; of course it is WAS/WERE. As the subject of the passive voice RACHNA is singular, so it will be WAS.

7. The poet read his long poem himself.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (The long poem was read by the poet himself.). Three form of the verb READ are the same i.e. they are READ, READ, READ. But the verb in the given sentence cannot be V1 as the subject is POET, which is in the singular, so had it been V1 it would had been READS. Nor can it be V3 as V3 cannot come alone; it always takes a helping verb. Therefore it’s V2, means the Past Simple Tense, means only WAS is correct.

8. Raksha Bandhan is celebrated all over the country.

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’ (All over the country people celebrate Raksha Bandhan.). IS CELEBRATED is in the Present Simple Tense, so the verb in the active voice will be CELEBRATE.

9. We need to complete it immediately.

Answer: B

10. He is going to cast his vote for the first time.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (For the first time the vote is going to be cast by him.). Here the structure of the sentence is Subject + Verb + Infinitive + Object where the subject is HE, the verb is IS GOING, the infinitive is TO CAST, and the object is HIS VOTE.

In this structure the object of the infinitive in the Active Voice is taken as the subject of the sentence in the passive and the verb of the active remains to be the same, only the infinitive is made into passive; e.g.

a) His colleagues started to respect Hari.
= Hari started to be respected by his colleagues.

b) People came to recognize her as the leading actress soon.
= She came to be recognized as the leading actress soon.

c) He is to do it.
= It is to be done by him.

d) Someone seems to have made a mistake.
= A mistake seems to have been made by someone.

e) I’m going to bring him here.
= He is going to be brought here by me.

NOTE: Sometimes possessive adjective (my, our, your, his, her, their, its, one’s) of the subject is mentioned in the object of the Active Voice, while converting such a sentence into the passive, normally we remove that possessive adjective and replace it with the article THE, though THE sometimes is not necessary; e.g.

a) We had already taken our meals.
= The meals had already been taken by us.

b) One must do one’s duty.
= Duty must be done.

11. He is said to be a very honest officer.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (They say that he is a very honest officer.). In this question we have to convert the given sentence into the active voice. But here we’ll know how to change active to passive of such type of sentences for better understanding. You see verb (here SAY) of the active of this sentence is following a THAT-CLAUSE (that he is a very honest officer); now know the rule:

When the verb of the active is followed by a THAT-CLAUSE

It + Passive Verb of the Main Clause + That-Clause as it is

OR

Subject of That-Clause + Passive Verb of the Main-Clause + To-infinitive of the Verb of That-Clause + Given Object/Adjective

EXAMPLES
a) People consider that Mohan is a fool.
= It is considered that Mohan is a fool.
= Mohan is considered to be a fool.

b) People said that he was jealous of her.
=It was said that he was jealous of her.
= He was said to be jealous of her.

c) People say he is handsome.
= It is said that he is handsome.
= He is said to be handsome.

d) They know he has an idea.
= It is known that he has an idea.
= He is known to have an idea.

12. Boil the water and cool it before you keep it in the fridge.

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’ (Let the water be boiled and cooled before it is kept in the fridge.). Here there are two orders BOIL and COOL, so we need to convert both these verbs into V3. Also when a helping verb is common to two or more verbs it’s only put before the first one, so it will BE BOILED AND COOLED.

13. She sincerely asked the man to tell her everything in details.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (The man was sincerely asked by her to tell her everything in details.).Here the structure is Subject + Verb + Object + Infinitive where the subject is SHE, the verb is ASKED, the object is THE MAN, and the infinitive is TO TELL.

14. Will she tell us the truth?

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’ (Will the truth be told to us by her?). The given sentence is in the Active Voice and its verb TELL has two objects; one of the objects is US and the other is TRUTH. Verbs that take two objects in the Active Voice, can be changed into Passive Voice with either of the objects as subject of the passive. But if the object denoting a person is not made the subject of the passive, a suitable preposition out of TO and FOR is put before it; e.g.

a) The guard refused him admittance.
=He was refused admittance by the guard.
OR Admittance was refused to him by the guard.

b) I bought my son a pen.
= My son was bought a pen.
OR A pen was bought for my son.

c) He promised me a gift.
= I was promised a gift.
OR A gift was promised to me.

NOTE: Option ‘D’ (Will the truth be told us by her?) is incorrect as its subject is TRUTH; and TRUTH is not a person; it means we’ll have to use a suitable preposition before US.

15. Why do you tell a lie?

Answer: C

16. You surprise me.

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’ (I am surprised.). Option ‘D’ is incorrect as ME cannot be used as subject of a sentence. ME is the objective case of I, so it’s used only as an object.

17. It is time to ring the bell.

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’ (It is time for the bell to be rung.). Active sentences beginning with ‘IT IS TIME’ are converted into passive by ‘IT IS TIME + FOR + NOUN/PRONOUN + TO BE + V3’, e.g.

a) It is time to close the shop.
= It is time for the shop to be closed.

b) It is time to give the final warning.
= It is time for the final warning to be given.

18. The main skills we seek to develop include analysing, interpreting and evaluating ideas.

Answer: B

Explanation: Option ‘B’ (The main skills sought to be developed by us include analysing, interpreting and evaluating ideas.). Here we need to find the object of the infinitive DEVELOP. To find the object of word we make questions by putting WHAT or WHOM after that word. So our questions are DEVELOP WHAT? and DEVELOP WHOM? By this formula we find that our question is DEVELOP WHAT? You can see THE MAIN SKILLS is the right answer to this question, hence our object.

Now we see this structure is in the form of Subject + Verb + Infinitive + Object where the subject is WE, the verb is SEEK, The infinitive is TO DEVELOP and the object of the infinitive is THE MAIN SKILLS. In this construction the object of the infinitive in the active voice is taken as the subject of the sentence in the passive and the verb of the active remains to be the same if it’s a person and the verb is normally changed to the past participle (V3) if it’s a thing, only infinitive is made into passive; e.g.

His colleagues started to respect Hari.
= Hari started to be respected by his colleagues.

19. His hard work satisfied me.

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’ (I was satisfied with his hard work.). With certain verbs we use a preposition other than BY when the subject of the active sentence is not a person. With the verb SATISFY we use WITH; e.g.

a) Smoke filled the room.
= The room was filled with smoke.

b) The boy’s work pleased the teacher.
= The teacher was pleased with the boy’s work.

20. He was disgusted with the flattery of his assistant.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (The flattery of his assistant disgusted him.). With certain verbs we use a preposition other than BY when the subject of the active sentence is not a person, so it’s WITH instead of BY. The object of the preposition WITH is THE FLATTERY OF HIS ASSISTANT; therefore it will be the subject in the active voice.

21. When he left school, the text books were put aside by him and never reopened.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (He put aside his textbooks when he left school and never reopened them.). The given sentence is in the Passive Voice. And its subject is THE TEXT BOOKS. Therefore it will become the object of the sentence in the Active Voice; in fact we’ll have to use its pronoun THEM instead. And its subject will be HE.. The verb of the Active Voice will be REOPEN (not WERE REOPENED).

Option ‘C’ is incorrect as the verb REOPEN in the Active Voice needs the object THEM.

22. He was arrested on a charge of theft, but for lack of evidence he was released.

Answer: C

23. Darjeeling grows tea.

Answer: B

24. Do you understand what I mean?

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’ (Is what I mean understood by you?). The given sentence is interrogative, so its passive too should be interrogative as we do not change the type of a sentence in changing the voice. The given sentence begins with a help verb (here DO), therefore its passive too should begin with a helping verb. As the tense of the given sentence is the Present Simple Tense our passive construction too will be in the Present Simple Tense; hence option ‘B’ is rejected.

NOTE: The object of the verb UNDERSTAND is the complete clause WHAT I MEAN, so it will be the subject of the sentence in the passive.

25. Before festivals the shops are thronged with men, women and children making various purchases.
