1. Someone had cleaned my shoes and brushed my suit.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. Both the verbs (CLEANED and BRUSHED) have different objects, so we must make both those objects as subjects of the sentence in the passive voice. We do not need to repeat the possessive adjective MY as both SHOES and SUIT belong to the same person. Helping verb HAD BEEN also is not to be repeated as this is common for both the main verbs.

2. I haven’t read The Three Musketeers.

Answer: B

Explanation: Option ‘B’. THE THREE MUSKETEERS is singular as it’s the name of a novel, so option ‘A’ is incorrect. Option ‘C’ is incorrect because when there are two helping verbs we place NOT between them. Option ‘D’ is incorrect as the 3rd form of READ is READ itself, not READED.

3. In some districts farmers use pigs to find truffles.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. TRUFFLE = a type of fungus that grows underground and can be eaten. Truffles are expensive because they are very rare.

4. Someone switched on a light and opened the door.

Answer: B

5. Suman was interviewing the political leaders.

Answer: A

6. He urged the council to reduce the rates.

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’. ‘Subject + Urge + Object + Infinitive + Object’ structure is converted into the passive voice in either of the following manners. Other such verbs are Advise, Beg, Order and Recommend:

a) Object of the Verb + Passive Verb + Infinitive + Object of the Infinitive
b) Subject + Verb + That + Object of the Infinitive + Should + Passive Infinitive without TO

He urged the employers to increase the salary.
= The employers were urged to increase the salary.
OR He urged that the salary should be increased.

7. The national anthem is being sung by Jason.

Answer: B

8. Before they invented printing, people had to write everything by hand.

Answer: A

9. He wants someone to take photographs.

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’. See that the structure of the sentence is ‘Subject + verb + Object + Infinitive + Object’. In this structure if they are verbs of LIKING, LOVING, WANTING, WISHING, etc., while converting active voice into the passive, we retain the subject and the verb of the active as it is, and the infinitive is converted into the passive. But we have to take care here that if the subject of the sentence and object of the infinitive are different we also place that object after the verb; e.g.

a) He doesn’t like people to call him a cheat.
= He doesn’t like to be called a cheat.

[See the subject of the sentence (HE) and object of the infinitive (HIM) are referring to the same person]

b) He wants someone to take photographs.
= He wants photographs to be taken.

[See the subject of the sentence (HE) and object of the infinitive (PHOTOGRAPHS) are different.]

10. What did they steal?

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. In an interrogative sentence beginning with WHAT it can be the subject or the object. In the given sentence WHAT is the object. The subject is THEY as it’s between the helping verb and the main verb.

While converting a sentence in the active voice into the passive voice, we know, the subject is taken as the object and the object is taken as the object. It means that WHAT will be the subject and THEM (objective form of THEY) will be the object. But we do not need to mention the object in the passive as THEY is not referring to specific people, rather it’s vague here.
