1. She said, “When I was a child, I wasn’t afraid of ghosts.”

Answer: B

Explanation: Option ‘B’.

WHEN I WAS A CHILD किसी time का बोध कराता है; अतः ये एक time clause है, अतः इस clause की verb WAS का tense नहीं बदला जाएगा. और I WASN’T AFRAID OF GOSTS इसका main clause है; अतः इसकी verb WASN’T का tense बदला भी जा सकता है और नहीं भी. इसलिए Direct Speech के sentence की एक अन्य संभव Indirect Speech:

She said that when she was a child she hadn’t been afraid of ghosts.

2. Renu said, “You ought to read the instructions.”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. Direct Speech में दिया गया वाक्य एक advice है. advice के लिए ‘Ought To/Should’ को ‘Advise + Object + TO-infinitive’ से बदला जा सकता है.

3. “I could read when I was three.” she boasted.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’.

Direct Speech के दिए हुए sentence में WHEN I WAS THREE किसी time का बोध कराता है; अतः ये एक time clause है, अतः इस clause की verb WAS का tense नहीं बदला जाएगा. और I COULD READ इसका main clause है; अतः इसकी verb COULD का tense बदला भी जा सकता है और नहीं भी. इसलिए Direct Speech के sentence की एक अन्य संभव Indirect Speech:

She boasted that she had been able to read when she was three.

4. He said, “We shall discuss this tomorrow.”

Answer: B

Explanation: Option ‘B’. इस वाक्य में THIS एक pronoun है; adjective नहीं. THIS और THESE जब pronoun का काम करते हैं और वे वाक्य के subject होते हैं तो उनको क्रमश: IT और THEY में बदला जाता है; और यदि वे object होते हैं तो उनको क्रमश: IT और THEM में बदला जाता है. दिए गये वाक्य में THIS इसका subject है.

5. I said to my friend, “Good morning! Let’s go for a picnic today.”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. देखिये LET’S (LET US) को Indirect Speech में कैसे बदला जाता है:

LET’s (LET US) को आमतौर पर कोई सुझाव (suggestion) देने के लिए use किया जाता है; इसका use जब कोई suggestion देने के लिए किया जाता है तो हम इसको इस प्रकार से बदलते हैं:

Suggest + Gerund (ing form)
अथवा
Suggest + Possessive Adjective (my, his, their, etc) + Gerund
अथवा
Suggest That + Subject + V1 without S/ES (present Subjunctive)
अथवा
Suggest That + Subject + Should
अथवा
Suggested That + Subject + V2
अथवा
Suggested That + Subject + Should
अथवा
Suggest To + Object + That
अथवा
Suggest + Noun/Pronoun

कुछ उदाहरण
a) He said, “Let’s leave the case at the station.”
= He suggested leaving the case at the station.
= He suggested our leaving the case at the station.
= He suggested that we should leave the case at the station.

b) She said to me, “Let’s have a meeting.”
= She suggested having a meeting.
= She suggested our having a meeting.
= She suggested a meeting.
= She suggested that we should have a meeting.
= She suggested to me that we should have a meeting.

c) He said, “Let’s stop now and finish it later.”
= He suggested stopping then and finishing it later.
= He suggested that we should stop then and finish it later.
= He suggested they shouldn’t say anything till they heard the facts.

d) He said, “Let’s not say anything about it till we hear the facts.”
= He suggested not saying anything about it till they heard the facts.
= He suggested saying nothing about it till they heard the facts.

e) “Let’s go to the cinema,” said Ved. “Yes, let’s” I said.
= Ved suggested going to the cinema and I agreed.

NOTE-I: ‘LET’S NOT + VERB’ को इस प्रकार से बदला जा सकता है:

He was against saying anything about it till they heard the facts.

NOTE-II: लेकिन ‘LET’S NOT’ का use जब किसी सकारात्मक सुझाव (affirmative suggestion) के answer के रूप में अकेले में किया जाता है तो इसको इस तरह से बदला जाता है: OPPOSED THE IDEA अथवा WAS AGAINST, आदि; जैसे

“Let’s sell the house.” said Ram. “Let’s not.” said Ritu.
= Ram suggested selling the house but Ritu was against it/the idea.
= Ram suggested selling the house but Ritu opposed the idea.
= Ram suggested selling the house but Ritu was opposed to the idea

NOTE-III: LET’S (LET US)का use कभी-कभी किसी को कोई कार्यवाही करने के लिए उकसाना/जोश भरना होता है (a call to an action); ऐसे में इसको आमतौर पर इस प्रकार बदला जाता है: Urge/Advice + Object + To-infinitive; e.g.

The strike leader said, “Let’s show the bosses that we are united.”
= The strike leader urged the workers to show the bosses that they were united

6. He said, “Suresh slipped when he was trying to board a bus.”

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’. Clause ‘When he was trying to board a bus’ एक time clause  है क्योंकि ये एक time का बोध कराता है.

7. She said, “Whatever Saraj does displeases her mother- in-law”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’.

8. He said, “How cruel of him!”

Answer: A

9. You said, “My parents never liked my accepting any job but I had always wanted to stand on my own feet.”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. दूसरे clause की verb का tense यदि Past Perfect Tense हो तो पहले वाली verb का tense change नहीं होता अगर उसका tense Past Simple Tense हो; अतः पहले वाले clause की verb LIKED में कोई बदलाव नहीं होगा. Option ‘D’ अशुद्ध है क्योंकि verb TOLD के साथ किसी ना किसी object का होना आवश्यक होता है.

10. The Prime Minister said, “We should be united to fight the enemy tooth and nail.”

Answer: B

Explanation: Option ‘B’. Option ‘A’ अशुद्ध है क्योंकि Direct Speech में दिया गया वाक्य कोई request नहीं है. यहाँ pronoun WE को बदलने कि कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है क्योंकि subject Prime Minister pronoun WE में ही सम्मिलित है. FIGHT TOOTH AND NAIL = जो हमें चाहिए उसको पाने के लिए जी-तोड़ प्रयास करना; जैसे

We fought tooth and nail to get the route of the new road  changed.
