1. The speaker said, “We have assembled to pay homage to our departed leader.”

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’. Option ‘D’ is incorrect as the verb TELL (here TOLD) always takes an object. Option ‘A’ is incorrect because DECLARE as a reporting verb takes THAT. Also read this:

THAT can usually be omitted after SAY and TELL+OBJECT in the indirect speech. But it should be kept after other verbs such as complain, explain, object, point out, protest etc.; e.g.

a) I said to my sister, “I brought you a doll yesterday.” = I told my sister that I had brought her a doll the previous day. = I told my sister I had brought her a doll the previous day.

b) He said, “The teacher usually does not ask any question.” = He said that the teacher usually does not ask any question. = He said the teacher usually does not ask any question.

2. “What a stupid fellow you are!” she remarked.

Answer: B

3. A student came to me and said, “Sir, I shall be obliged to you if you grant me three days’ leave. I have to go to my village to see my father.”

Answer: C

Explanation:. Option ‘C’. Option ‘D’ is incorrect as the word SIR is said to give someone respect, so we should say RESPECTFULLY, not CALLING ME SIR.

4. She said to me, “What can I do for you, dear?”

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’. When we call someone DEAR it becomes AFECTIONATELY / LOVINGLY.

5. Socrates said, “Virtue is its own reward.”

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’. The sentence in the reported speech is a proverb/saying. You can’t change the tense of a proverb.

6. He said, “Let me have some tea.”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. Option ‘B’ is incorrect as in imperative sentences we use TOLD for giving instructions/orders. Option ‘C’ is incorrect as we use a THAT-CLAUSE after the verb WISH when we feel sad for a situation; e.g. I wish I had a car. Here LET = allow/permit; e.g.

a) “Let him come with us, mother; I’ll take care of him,” I said.
= I asked/requested my mother to let him come with us and promised to take care of him.

b) “Let me go!” the boy said to the policeman.
= The boy asked/requested the policeman to let him go.

7. He said to the interviewer, “Could you please repeat the question?”

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’. Option ‘B’ is incorrect as you cannot use the word PLEASE if the reporting verb is REQUEST. Option ‘A’ and Option ‘D’ are incorrect as we do not use a IF-CLAUSE with REQUEST as a reporting verb.

8. He said. “It used to be a lovely quiet street.”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. USED TO doesn’t change; e.g.

“I know the place well because I used to live here.” He explained.
= He explained that he knew the place well because he used to live there.

NOTE: IT remains unchanged, so option ‘C’ is incorrect.

9. The Prime Minister said that no one would be allowed to disturb the peace.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. Option ‘B’ is incorrect as NO ONE is a negative word, and hence it cannot be used with any negative verb. The conversion given at option ’A’ is in the active voice, as far as the meaning is clear change of voice is no wrong.

Another possible conversion:

The Prime Minister said, “No one will be allowed to disturb the peace.”

10.“What about going for a swim?” he said, “It’s quite fine now.”

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’. ‘WHAT ABOUT’ often introduces a suggestion and is then reported by SUGGEST; e.g.

a) “What about flying?” she said.
= She suggested flying.

b) “I can’t come at 1.00,” said Sangeeta. “Then what about 2.00?” said Tarun.
= Sangeeta said she couldn’t come at 1.00, so Tarun suggested 2.00.
