1. He said, “My God, I am ruined.”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. Option ‘B’ is incorrect as the word like SADLY is necessary here. We say MY GOD or OH MY GOD to emphasize how sad, surprised, angry, shocked, etc. you are; e.g.

a) My God, what a mess!
b) Oh my God, I’ve never seen anything like it!

2. The teacher said to Ram, “Would you like to go on a trip to Kashmir?” Ram said, “Yes.”

Answer: C

Explanation: ption ‘C’. To say SOMEBODY REPLIED YES is a wrong way, so option ‘B’ is incorrect. The word AFFIRMATIVE when is followed by a noun is an adjective; and when used alone, is a noun in itself. IN THE AFFIRMATIVE = YES; and hence a right expression. IN AFFIRMATIVE is wrong as the article THE is necessary here, hence option ‘D’ is incorrect. How YES & NO answers in questions are reported in the indirect speech see the following:

Subject + Appropriate Helping Verb
OR
We convert YES into ‘Answered/Replied in the Affirmative’; we convert NO into Answered/Replied in the Negative

a) He said, “Will you have time to do it?” and I said “Yes.”
= He asked if I would have time to do it and I said that I would.
= He asked if I would have time to do it and I replied/answered in the affirmative.

b) He said, “Can you swim?” and I said “NO.”
= He asked (me) if I could swim and I said I could not.
= He asked (me) if I could swim and replied/answered in the negative.

3. I said, “Let Mohan do his worst, he cannot harm me.”

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ’D’. This is not a suggestion, so ‘A’ is incorrect. TOLD as reporting verb in indirect speech is always followed by an OBJECT, so option ‘B’ also is incorrect. This is a declaration/challenge by the speaker. DECLARATION = to say something firmly and clearly.

LET SOMEBODY DO STH is also used to give a challenge; and used to show that you are not afraid or worried about somebody doing something. Here use of THOUGH is necessary; it’s used before a clause to show that the statement of that clause is less important or unimportant. So option ‘D’ is correct.

4. The student said, “Let me come in.”

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’. Option ‘C’ is not correct as the verb REQUEST must have an object or a THAT-CLAUSE; it would have been fine if the sentence was ‘The student requested the teacher/principal to let him come in’.

5. He said, “We have done our work.”

Answer: C

6. He said, “Babies, drink milk.”

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’. This is advice. Also, if you see the sentence, in the direct speech BABIES are addressed as a COMMA is there just after. When somebody is addressed, that person becomes the object of the reporting verb.

7. The doctor says, “It is better you undergo a surgery next week.”

Answer: B

Explanation: Option ‘B’. Option ‘A’ is incorrect as the reporting verb (says) is in the present tense, you cannot change its tense in any case, you see ADVISED is in the past tense. Both Option ‘C’ and option ‘D’ are incorrect as the reporting verb (says) is in the present tense, therefore you cannot change the tense of the reported speech. NEXT WEEK and THE FOLLOWING WEEK is the same thing.

8. “Don’t play on the grass, boys,” she said.

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’. This is an order; and an order can also be reported by the verb TELL, so TOLD is correct.

9. He told the boy not to sit there.

Answer: D

10. She said, “I must have a computer to prepare a power-point presentation.”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. When something is necessary to do, MUST can remain unchanged or becomes HAD TO in the indirect speech; e.g.

a) He said, “I must be there by nine tomorrow.”
= He said that he MUST be there by nine the next day.
= He said that he HAD TO be there by nine the next day.

b) He said, “I must wash my hands.”
= He said that he must wash his hands.
= He said that he had to wash his hands.
