1. He said, “My God, I am ruined.”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (He exclaimed sadly that he was ruined.). Option ‘B’ अशुद्ध है क्योंकि SADLY जैसे किसी word का use यहाँ आवश्यक है. MY GOD अथवा OH MY GOD जैसे phrases का use ही ये कहने के लिए किया जाता है कि कोई कितना sad, surprised, angry, shocked, आदि है; जैसे

a) My God, what a mess!
b) Oh my God, I’ve never seen anything like it!

2. The teacher said to Ram, “Would you like to go on a trip to Kashmir?” Ram said, “Yes.”

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’ (The teacher asked Ram if he would like to go on a trip to Kashmir and Ram replied in the affirmative.). Direct Speech में दिए गये question का answer सिर्फ YES दिया हुआ है. Direct Speech में जब किसी question का answer ‘Yes’ अथवा ‘No’ दिया गया हुआ भी हो; उनको Indirect Speech में निम्बन प्दरकार से बदला जाता है:

Subject + Indirect Speech में use की गयी helping verb

अथवा

हम ‘yes’ को ‘answered/replied in the affirmative’ में बदलते हैं, और ‘no’ को ‘answered/replied in the negative’ में

a) He said, “Will you have time to do it?” and I said “Yes.”
= He asked if I would have time to do it and I said that I would.
= He asked if I would have time to do it and I replied/answered in the affirmative.

b) He said, “Can you swim?” and I said “NO.”
= He asked (me) if I could swim and I said I couldn’t.
= He asked (me) if I could swim and I replied/answered in the negative.

3. I said, “Let Mohan do his worst, he cannot harm me.”

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ’D’ (I declared that though Mohan might do his worst, he could not harm me.). Option ‘A’ अशुद्ध है क्योंकि ये कोई suggestion नहीं है. Option ‘B’ भी अशुद्ध है क्योंकि verb TOLD के साथ किसी object का use आवश्यक होता है. यह एक declaration/challenge है. DECLARATION = एलान

‘Let somebody do something’ को कोई challenge देने के लिए भी use किया जाता है; और ये कहने के लिए भी use किया जाता है कि तुम किसी बात से डरते नहीं हो.

4. The student said, “Let me come in.”

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’ (The student requested that he might be allowed to come in.). Option ‘C’ अशुद्ध है क्योंकि verb REQUEST के साथ कोई object या किसी THAT-CLAUSE का use आवश्यक होता है. ये option सही होता यदि ये  यूँ होता:

The student requested the teacher/principal to let him come in’.

5. He said, “We have done our work.”

Answer: C

6. He said, “Babies, drink milk.”

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’ (He advised the babies to drink milk.). Direct Speech में दिया गया वाक्य एक advice है. ध्यान से देखिये Direct Speech के वाक्य में BABIES के बाद comma लगा हुआ है; इसका अर्थ है कि इस वाक्य में जो भी बोला गया है वह BABIES को  सम्भोदित (address) करके बोला हुआ है. जब किसी को सम्भोदित करके कुछ बोला जाता है वह व्यक्ति Reporting Verb का object बन जाता है.

7. The doctor says, “It is better you undergo a surgery next week.”

Answer: B

Explanation: Option ‘B’ (The doctor says that it is better I undergo a surgery the following week.).

8. “Don’t play on the grass, boys,” she said.

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’ (She told the boys not to play on the grass.). Direct Speech में दिया गया वाक्य एक order है; कोई order verb TELL से भी report किया जा सकता है; अतः verb TOLD iसही है.

9. He told the boy not to sit there.

Answer: D

10. She said, “I must have a computer to prepare a power-point presentation.”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (She said she had to have a computer to prepare a power-point presentation.). किसी कार्य का करना जब अनिवार्य हो तो MUST को ना बदलना भी शुद्ध होता है और इसको HAD TO में भी बदलना शुद्ध होता है; जैसे

a) He said, “I must be there by nine tomorrow.”
= He said that he MUST be there by nine the next day.
= He said that he HAD TO be there by nine the next day.

b) He said, “I must wash my hands.”
= He said that he must wash his hands.
= He said that he had to wash his hands.
