1. “Don’t hesitate to clear your doubts,” said the teacher.
Answer: C
Explanation: Option ‘C’. This is persuasion, not an order/a request. PERSUADE = to make somebody do something by giving them good reasons for doing that. Here the teacher is persuading me to clear my doubts.
2. She yelled, “Please help me.”
Answer: D
Explanation: Option ‘D’. YELL = to shout loudly, for example because you are angry, excited, frightened or in pain. We use YELL AT for persons and ‘Yell + any suitable preposition’ for nouns other than persons; e.g.
a) He yelled at me furiously.
b) She yelled at the boy to get down from the wall.
c) Stop yelling at me!
d) He yelled for help.
e) She yelled in pain as she touched the hot iron.
f) The children were yelling with delight.
g) I had to yell at the top of my voice to make myself heard.
NOTE: We use ONE for unknown unspecific persons and SOMEONE for unknown specific persons, means it was a particular person at whom she yelled; hence option ‘A’ is incorrect.
3. The teacher said to the boys, “If you do your best you will surely pass.”
Answer: D
Explanation: Option ‘D’. Option ‘A’ is incorrect as the sentence in the inverted commas is not an imperative sentence. The sentence is a type-I conditional sentence. The tenses of a type-I condition sentence change in the usual way; e.g.
She said, “If you work hard you’ll pass the exam.”
= She said if she worked hard she would pass the exam.
4. The Principal asked me whether I had informed the Chief Guest the revised schedule the day before.
Answer: D
Explanation: Option ‘D’. The given sentence is in the indirect speech and has the time expression THE DAY BEFORE. We know that in direct speech THE DAY BEFORE changes to YESTERDAY. But two options ‘C’ and ‘D’ have the word YESTERDAY. And we also know that both the Present Perfect Tense and the Past Simple Tense change to the past perfect, but YESTERDAY cannot be used with the Present Perfect Tense, so option ‘D’ is correct, not option ‘C’.
5. She said to Rita, “Please help me with my homework.”
Answer: C
6. “Govind,” said the manager sternly, “I command you to tell me what the old man said.”
Answer: C
Explanation: Option ‘C’. Words like Command, Order, Advice, etc. are not followed by adverbs when a noun or pronoun is there after them. So the adverb STERNLY will appear before the word COMMAND. In option ‘A’ see that the verb COMMANDED is followed by ‘TO GOVIND’, hence incorrect.
7. The Principal told us, “Wait here till I return.”
Answer: B
Explanation: Option ‘B’. The verb TELL also means to ask somebody to do something.
8. The queen said to her son, “You must go to the forest and remain there till your father calls you back.”
Answer: A
Explanation: Option ‘A’. MUST here is a modal verb for both the verbs GO and REMAIN; remember if the same modal verb is needed for two or more verbs it’s not repeated. And after every modal verb like MUST we always use the first form of a verb, so REMAIN won’t get any change. So option ‘B’ is incorrect. Option ‘C’ is incorrect as the tense of the verb CALLS must change into the Past Simple Tense.
9. My father said, “Bravo! You have done well.”
Answer: A
Explanation: Option ‘A’. Exclamation word BRAVO changes to ‘shout with applause’ OR ‘applaud + object + saying’. Another possible passive conversion:
My father shouted with applause that I had done well.
APPLAUD = to express praise for sb/sth because you approve of them or it. BRAVO is used in exclamations at the end of some event to express one’s happiness.
10. “I have seen the film before.” says Sunita.
Answer: B
Explanation: Option ‘B’. The tense of the verb in the direct speech (HAVE SEEN) won’t change as the reporting verb (here SAYS) is in the present tense.
