1. “Stop talking, children,” said the teacher.
Answer: A
Explanation: Option ‘A’ (The teacher ordered the children to stop talking.). Both the Options ‘B’ and ‘C’ are incorrect because we do not use any preposition before the object of the verb ASK/TELL. Option ‘D’ is also incorrect as the verb ASK can’t be used while reporting an Imperative Sentence.
2. The teacher said, “Gandhiji was born in India.”
Answer: C
Explanation: Option ‘C’ (The teacher said that Gandhiji was born in India.). A past tense used to describe ‘a regular habit’, ‘a natural occurrence’, ‘a historical event’, ‘a state of affairs which still exists when the speech is reported’ remains unchanged; e.g.
a) He said, “Gandhiji started the Quit India Movement.” (an historical event)
= He said that Gandhiji started the Quit India Movement.
b) Our teacher said, “Ashoka left war after the conquest of Kalinga.” (an historical event)
= Our teacher said Ashoka left war after the conquest of Kalinga.
c) He said, “I decided not to buy the house because it was on a main road.” (a state of affairs which still exists when the speech is reported)
= He said that he had decided not to buy the house because it was on a main road.
[You see that here the location of the house is the same i.e. it is still on a main road.]
d) He said, “I had a dream last night.” (a natural occurrence)
= He said that he had a dream the previous night.”
3. I said to my sister, “I brought you a doll yesterday.”
Answer: B
4. The mother says to the child, “The sun rises in the east.”
Answer: A
Explanation: Option ‘A’ (The mother tells the child the sun rises in the east.). THAT can usually be omitted after ‘say’ and ‘tell + object’ in the indirect speech. e.g.
I said to my sister, “I brought you a doll yesterday.”
= I told my sister that I had brought her a doll the previous day.
= I told my sister I had brought her a doll the previous day.
He said, “The teacher usually does not ask any question.”
= He said that the teacher usually does not ask any question.
= He said the teacher usually does not ask any question.
“Father”, said son, “The teacher said to me, you are a naughty boy.”
= Son told his father that the teacher had told him that he was a naughty boy.
= Son told his father that the teacher had told him that he was a naughty boy.
5. “I lost my book yesterday” she said to her teacher.
Answer: A
Explanation: Option ‘A’ (She admitted to her teacher that she had lost her book the previous day.). Both structures ‘admit to someone that’ and ‘admit doing something’ are equally correct, but option ‘C’ can’t be correct as YESTERDAY changes into THE PREVIOUS DAY when the reporting verb (here SAID) is in the past. Here ADMIT = to agree unwillingly that something is true
6. “Where do you live?” asked the stranger.
Answer: A
7. I said to him, “How do you know this?”
Answer: D
Explanation: Option ‘D’ (I asked him how he knew it.). THIS in time expressions becomes THAT if the reporting verb in the direct speech is in past tense: He said, “He is coming THIS week.” = He said that he was coming THAT week. But THIS is a pronoun here, when THIS is a pronoun it changes into IT.
8. “Would you mind taking off your shoes before entering the house?” he said to the foreigner.
Answer: A
Explanation: Option ‘A’ (He requested the foreigner to take off his shoes before entering the house.). Though the sentence in the direct speech appears to be a question, in fact it’s a request. Remember that a request can also be made in the question form. WOULD YOU MIND is always a request. How it’s converted into the passive see this:
“Would you mind signing the register?” he said.
= He requested me to sign the register.
= He asked me to sign the register.
= He asked me if I would mind signing the register.
9. He said, “We are all sinners.”
Answer: A
Explanation: Option ‘A’ (He said that we are all sinners.). The sentence in the Direct Speech is a universal truth; there its tense won’t change. The pronoun WE will also be not changed as the person making the Direct Speech is also included in the pronoun WE.
10. The principal said, “Why didn’t you attend the flag hoisting ceremony, Anuj?”
Answer: A
Explanation:
Option ‘A’ (The Principal asked Anuj why he didn’t attend the flag hoisting ceremony.). In theory the past simple changes to the past perfect. But it is often left unchanged, provided this can be done without causing confusion about the relative times of the action; e.g.
He said, “Mohan arrived on Monday.”
= He said that Mohan arrived on Monday.
= He said that Mohan had arrived on Monday.
Therefore, another possible conversion of the given sentence: The Principal asked Anuj why he hadn’t attended the flag hoisting ceremony.
Option ‘C’ is incorrect as name of the person addressed (ANUJ) is not given after the reporting verb. Option ‘D’ is incorrect as it’s a question in the direct speech, we must not use the reporting verb TOLD in the indirect speech.
