1. “Stop talking, children,” said the teacher.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (The teacher ordered the children to stop talking.). Option ‘B’ और option ‘C’ दोनों अशुद्ध है क्योंकि verb ASK/TELL के object से पहले कोई preposition नहीं आता. Option ‘D’ भी अशुद्ध है क्योंकि Imperative Sentences की reporting में verb SAY का use गलत होता है.

2. The teacher said, “Gandhiji was born in India.”

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’ (The teacher said that Gandhiji was born in India.). जब Past Simple Tense का use किसी नियमित आदत (regular habit), प्राकृतिक घटना (natural occurrence), ऐतिहासिक घटना (historical event) अथवा ऐसी स्थिति को बताता है जो Indirect Speech के करने के time पर भी विद्यमान हो तो tense में कोई बदलाव नहीं होता; जैसे

a) He said, “Gandhiji started the Quit India Movement.” (ऐतिहासिक घटना)
= He said that Gandhiji started the Quit India Movement.

b) Our teacher said, “Ashoka left war after the conquest of Kalinga.” (ऐतिहासिक घटना)
= Our teacher said Ashoka left war after the conquest of Kalinga.

c) He said, “I decided not to buy the house because it was on a main road.” (ऐसी स्थिति जो Indirect Speech के करने के time पर भी विद्यमान है.)
= He said that he had decided not to buy the house because it was on a main road.

d) He said, “I had a dream last night.” (प्राकृतिक घटना)
= He said that he had a dream the previous night.”

3. I said to my sister, “I brought you a doll yesterday.”

Answer: B

4. The mother says to the child, “The sun rises in the east.”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (The mother tells the child the sun rises in the east.). Indirect Speech में Reporting Verb ‘Say’ और ‘tell + object’ के साथ हम conjunction ‘that’ का use चाहे करें चाहे न करें हमारी मर्जी होती है; जैसे

I said to my sister, “I brought you a doll yesterday.”
= I told my sister that I had brought her a doll the previous day.
= I told my sister I had brought her a doll the previous day.

He said, “The teacher usually does not ask any question.”
= He said that the teacher usually does not ask any question.
= He said the teacher usually does not ask any question.

“Father”, said son, “The teacher said to me, you are a naughty boy.”
= Son told his father that the teacher had told him that he was a naughty boy.
= Son told his father the teacher had told him that he was a naughty boy.

5. “I lost my book yesterday” she said to her teacher.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (She admitted to her teacher that she had lost her book the previous day.). संरचना ‘admit to someone that’ और ‘admit doing something’ दोनों ही समान रूप से शुद्ध होती हैं; परन्तु option ‘C’ अशुद्ध है क्योंकि Reporting Verb जब past tense में हो तो YESTERDAY को THE PREVIOUS DAY में बदला जाता है. Option D’ इसलिए अशुद्ध है क्योंकि verb TOLD एक transitive verb है; अर्थात इसके लिए कोई object आवश्यक होता है; परन्तु इस option में verb TOLD के लिए कोई object नहीं दिया है.

6. “Where do you live?” asked the stranger.

Answer: A

7. I said to him, “How do you know this?”

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’ (I asked him how he knew it.). Direct Speech के वाक्य में word THIS एक pronoun है. ‘This’ और ‘that’ जब pronouns के रूप में use होते हैं तो ये दोनों ‘it’ में बदल जाते हैं; और ‘these’ और ‘those’ जब  pronouns के रूप में use होते हैं तो ये दोनों ‘they/them’ में बदल जाते हैं; e.g.

He showed me two bullets and said, “I found these embedded in the paneling.”
= He showed me two bullets and said he had found them embedded in the paneling.

He said, “We will discuss this tomorrow.”
= He said that they would discuss it the next day.

8. “Would you mind taking off your shoes before entering the house?” he said to the foreigner.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (He requested the foreigner to take off his shoes before entering the house.). Direct Speech का वाक्य हालाँकि एक question प्रतीत होता है; परन्तु वास्तव में ये एक request है. कोई request question form भी की जा सकती है. WOULD YOU MIND हमेशा एक request ही होती है. देखिये इसको Indirect Speech में कैसे बदलते हैं:

“Would you mind signing the register?” he said.
= He requested me to sign the register.
= He asked me to sign the register.
= He asked me if I would mind signing the register.

9. He said, “We are all sinners.”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (He said that we are all sinners.). Direct Speech में दिया गया वाक्य एक सार्वभौमिक सत्य (universal truth) है; अतः इसका tense change नहीं होगा. Pronoun WE में भी कोई change नहीं होगा क्योंकि Direct Speech कहने वाला व्यक्ति इस pronoun में सम्मिलित है.

10. The principal said, “Why didn’t you attend the flag hoisting ceremony, Anuj?”

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’ (The Principal asked Anuj why he didn’t attend the flag hoisting ceremony.). नियमानुसार वैसे तो Past Simple Tense को Indirect Speech में Past Perfect Tense में बदला जाता है; परन्तु कई बार इसको बदला नहीं जाता है खासतौर पर तब जब किये गये action के समय के बारे में कोई शंका/भ्रम ना हो; जैसे

He said, “Mohan arrived on Monday.”
= He said that Mohan arrived on Monday.
= He said that Mohan had arrived on Monday.

अतः दिए गये वाक्य की एक अन्य संभव Indirect Speech: The Principal asked Anuj why he hadn’t attended the flag hoisting ceremony.

Option ‘C’ अशुद्ध है क्योंकि इसमें जिस व्यक्ति को सम्भोदित किया गया है उसको mention नहीं किया गया है; अर्थात ANUJ नाम mention नहीं किया गया है. Option ‘D’ इसलिए अशुद्ध है क्योंकि Direct Speech का वाक्य एक question है; questions की reporting में verb TOLD का use नहीं किया जा सकता.
