1. Of late the number of literates ——– gone up.

Answer: D

Explanation: Option ‘D’. With a majority of, the majority of, a number of, a lot of, plenty of, all (of), or some (of) + plural noun we use a plural verb. But with THE NUMBER OF we use a singular verb. OF LATE suggests the tense should be the present; e.g.

a) A number of refugees have been turned back at the border.
b) The number of books in the library has risen to over fifty thousand.

Of late = recently; e.g. We haven’t spoken of late.

2. The examination will begin ——– Monday.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. When something begins we use a preposition referring to particular point of time.

3. Rajesh has come up ——– a problem.

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’. Come up against = to be faced with or opposed by sb/sth

Hindi translation of the given sentence: राजेश के सामने एक समस्या आ गयी है.

4. We waited at the bus stop ——– the bus came.

Answer: C

Explanation: Option ‘C’. Till is also correct but it’s used informally. In standard English the formal version is used. We can’t use UNLESS here as we need a time expression. UNLESS is used for conditions.

5. I have done my muddle but ——– honest best.

Answer: B

Explanation: Option ‘B’. DO also means to clean something, or make something look neat and attractive. MUDDLE = an untidy or confused state. So, I have done my muddle = I have made things of confusion tidy/clear. Now see some examples of use of the verb DO:

a) I cooked the dinner so you can do the dishes. (Here DO = to wash/clean)
b) I want to do the room this afternoon. (Here DO = clean)

BUT RATHER also means ‘in an intensive way’.

Hindi translation of the given sentence: मैंने सब कुछ सही से कर लिया है और बहुत ही ज्यादा (intensively) सही तरीके से (honest best).

6. Every man craves ——– recognition.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. Crave for sth=to have a very strong desire for sth.

Hindi translation of the given sentence: हर व्यक्ति अपनी पहचान स्थापित करने के लिए बहुत ज्यादा लालायित होता है. ( = हर व्यक्ति प्रसिद्ध होना चाहता है.)

7. His conduct is bad, and his honesty is not ——– suspicion.

Answer: B

Explanation: Option ‘B’. If something is beyond suspicion there is enough proof for the person accused of something bad.

Hindi translation: उसका व्यवहार बुरा है और उसकी इमानदारी संदेह से परे नहीं है.

8. The inspector must enquire ——– the complaint.

Answer: B

Explanation: Option ‘B’. ENQUIRE INTO is a phrasal verb, which means to try to discover the facts about something.

9. Help yourself ——– whatever you can use without wasting time.

Answer: B

Explanation: Option ‘B’. Help oneself to something = take what you want without asking permission; e.g.

Please help yourself to some cake.

10. There ——– both the challenge and the secret of success.

Answer: A

Explanation: Option ‘A’. The verb LAY means to put something down carefully in a flat position. LIE means to be in or put yourself into a flat position. By going through the meanings of both of these verbs we can say that they are used in the same context. But there is a difference between the usage of both. LIE is used without an object whereas LAY is used with an object.

As in the above sentence ‘both the challenge and the secret of success’ is the real subject (the word THERE has been used as an artificial subject), means no object is there. Therefore, if the given sentence is in the present tense the verb LIE will be used; and if it’s in the past tense the 2nd form of LIE the verb LAY will be used. But this sentence is like a proverb; therefore LIE is correct.
