CENTRAL GST/EXCISE INSPECTOR JOB PROFILE
Selection to the post of GST/EXCISE INSPECTOR in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC/CBEC) is made through the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).
- In the 6th CPC he was entitled for the Grade Pay of Rs 4,600. Now in the 7th CPC he is entitled for the Basic Pay Rs 44,900 and comes under the level 7 of the following Pay Matrix Table.

JOB NATURE OF GST/EXCISE INSPECTOR
If posted in Headquarter – Clerical/File work
If not in Headquarter: Executive work e.g. augmentation of Goods & Service tax (GST), customs duty, detection of evasion of taxes etc.
Though only the Goods and Service Tax (GST) are under GST/EXCISE INSPECTOR , but where there is no post of Examiner and Preventive Officer generally it’s the Excise Inspector who handles their duties. So he does the customs duty many a time.
Uniform (khaki) is there for this post but generally optional to wear.
PROMOTIONS IN THE POST OF GST/EXCISE INSPECTOR

There is a qualifying period of 8 years for the promotion to the post of Superintendent; means he can’t be promoted to that post before completion of eight years of service as GST/Excise Inspector. There is a departmental exam for confirmation; without passing in that he cant’ be made confirmed; nor can he be promoted to the next post. Promotion period differs from zone to zone since there is zonal seniority. These posts are everywhere in the country.
WAY OF PROMOTION TO THE POST OF GST/EXCISE INSPECTOR
By promotion through Departmental Qualifying examination from the following categories of officers:
1. Executive Assistant (Sr Tax Assistant) or Stenographer Grade-I in level 6 in the pay matrix with five years regular service in the grade.
2. Executive Assistant (Sr Tax Assistant) or Stenographer Grade-I with fifteen years’ combined regular service in level 6 in the pay matrix and in level 4 in the pay matrix.
3. Officials (Women Searcher or Draftsman or Tax Assistant or Stenographer Grade-II) in level 4 in the pay matrix with fifteen years’ regular service in the grade.
NOTE: Candidates shall be required to pass Physical Test and conform to the physical standards prescribed for direct recruits.

MODE OF SELECTION FOR GST?EXCISE INSPECTOR
1. 90% by direct recruitment through SSC
2. 10% by promotion through Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE)
Age Limit
Upper age limit in the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam of the Staff Selection Commission for this post is 30 years.
NOTE: Computer Efficiency Test (CPT) is necessary to qualify to become EXCISE INSPECTOR.
COMPUTER PROFICIENCY (CPT) DETAILS FOR GST/EXCISE INSPECTOR
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) will hold a Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) for this post which will be of Qualifying nature and have the following three components:
1. Word Processing (DEST)–This is same as is the SKILL TEST for the post of TA
2. Spread Sheets (Excel)
3. Generation of Slides (Power Point)
NOTE-I: (VH) Visually Handicapped candidates (with 40% disability and above) will be allowed 35 minutes for DEST.
NOTE-II: All these tests are of 15 minutes each.
NOTE-III: If anybody fails in the CPT or chooses not to appear in it, he’ll be considered for all other posts for which CPT is not required.
PHYSICAL STANDARDS/PET for GST/EXCISE INSPECTOR
Male Candidates
i) Physical standards (Minimum)
1. Height 157.5 cms.
2. Chest 81 cms. (fully expanded with a minimum expansion of 5 cms.)
3. Height relaxable by 5 cms. In the case of Garwalis, Assamese, Gorkhas and members of Scheduled Tribes.
ii) Physical Test
1. Walking : 1600 metres in 15 minutes.
2. Cycling : 8 Kms in 30 minutes.
Female Candidates
i) Physical standards (Minimum)
1. Height 152 cms.
2. Weight 48 Kgs.
3. Height relaxable by 2.5 cms and weight by 2 Kgs. for Gorkhas, Garwalis, Assamese and members of Scheduled Tribes
ii) Physical Test
1. Walking : 1 Km. in 20 minutes.
2. Cycling : 3 Kms in 25 minutes.
NOTE:
For the post of Inspector Central Excise, Examiner and Preventive Officer, the following addendum is issued with reference to CBEC‘s letter No. C-18013/23/2013-Ad II B dated 20.11.2013.
Persons with disabilities will have to meet the physical standards i.e. Height, Chest and Weight prescribed for the post of Inspectors, Central Excise, Examiner and Preventive Officer in CBEC. However, for orthopedically disabled candidates the following relaxation in Physical Test is allowed:
1. The test of walking shall not be insisted in case of One Leg (OL) and One Arm & One Leg (OAL) categories.
2. The test of cycling shall not be insisted in case of One Arm (OA), One Leg (OL) and One Arm & One Leg (OAL) categories
ADDITIONAL POINTS
Promotions are now not as bad as they were before 2 years. Cadre restructuring has opened a lot of promotional avenues. Lots of new Service Tax and GST Commissionerates are being created due to the increase in the level of tax base.
GST/EXCISE INSPECTOR can go for deputation in Enforcement Directorate, CBI, DRI(Directorate of Revenue Intelligence), NCB.
