JOB PROFILE OF ACCOUNTANT/Jr ACCOUNTANT
Selection to the post of Accountant/Je Accountant is made through the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).
In the 6th CPC he was entitled for the Grade Pay of Rs 2,800. Now in the 7th CPC he is entitled for the Basic Pay Rs 29,200 and comes under level 5 of the following Pay Matrix Table.

PROMOTIONS FOR ACCOUNTANT Jr ACCOUNTANT
1. Sr Accountant (GP 4200) after 3 years
2. Assistant Accounts Officer (GP 4800) after qualifying AAO (Civil) Exam, consisting of 9 descriptive papers
3. Principal Accounts Officer (GP 5400 of Pay Band-2). Takes almost 15 years after becoming AAO.
4. Sr Accounts Officer (GP 5400 of Pay Band-3)
Accountant/Jr Accountant first has to pass a confirmatory exam to be confirmed. 3 years compulsory service at the post is the minimum qualifying period for his promotion to the next post of Sr Accountant; but subject to his confirmation. If a vacancy is not available promotion will take more than 3 years. The pay-band for Sr Accountant is 9,300-34,800 and grade pay of Rs 4,200 (PAY MATRIX LEVEL 6).
NATURE OF WORK OF ACCOUNTANT/Jr ACCOUNTANT
Mainly clerical. They are generally posted in Pay and Accounts Offices and Divisional Offices under various ministries. Broadly you can divide his duties as follows:
1. Passing of Various Bills: Salary, Allowances, Office Expenses, Contingent Bills etc.
2. Dealing with Pension and GPF matters: New Pension Scheme, Revision of Pension, Granting Family Pension, Gratuity, Leave Encashment, Group Insurance, etc
3. Receipts and Payments: To see accounting of revenue and compiling the expenditures incurred in civil ministries.
4. Any other
AGE LIMIT
Age limit in the Combined Graduate Level Exam (CGLE) conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for this post is 18-27 years.
NOTE: It being a Group-C service, a central govt employees servicing for 3 years continuously can take this exam up to 40 years for this post. For reserved categories add to it the usual age relaxation available to them.
