TAX ASSISTANT (TA) in Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) JOB PROFILE
Selection to the post of Tax Assistant (TA) in the Central Board of Indirect Direct Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is made through the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).
In the 6th CPC he was entitled for the Grade Pay of Rs 2,400. Now in the 7th CPC he is entitled for the Basic Pay Rs 25,500 and comes under level 4 of the following Pay Matrix Table.

JOB DESCRIPTION TA (CBIC)
Tax Assistant (TA) in CBIC can have three types of postings namely
1. Excise
2. Service Tax
3. Customs
NATURE OF WORK TA (CBIC)
Usually work of a Tax Assistant (TA) in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is purely clerical. His work mainly includes dispatch and prepare some reports of the section he is posted in. Mostly he works under Superintendent or Appraiser, But at some places he also works under Examiner, PO and Excise Inspector.
Secondly he can also be posted at any sensitive posting. There also his nature of work is mostly clerical work of the port he is posted at; like to put up the file for any new Registration/Cancellation of license or any other permissions. This type of posting is considered to be the best among all. But, here, you will get no or very less time for further study. Usually 6 days week affair there.
He is also posted as PA (Personal Assistant) of commissioners because of very low recruitment for the post of Steno these days Also you can be posted as PA of Joint/Additional Commissioner.
Promotions and Department Exams TA (CBIC)
1. Executive Assistant (Senior Tax Assistant)
2. Excise Inspector/PO/Examiner
3. Superintendent/Appraiser (Group-B gazetted)
4. Assistant Commissioner
5. Deputy Commissioner (+4 years)
6. Joint Commissioner (+4 years)
7. Additional Commissioner of Income Tax (+5 years)
Tax Assistant (TA) in CBIC is now usually promoted to Executive Assistant in 10 years after his joining, which is 4200 GP post (Pay Matrix Level 6), and can become Excise inspector/PO In next 3-4 years. For examiner this time period is longer; STA usually takes 8-9 years to become examiner means total 12 years because waiting to become examiner is very long.
Promotions depend on the number of vacancies available in that region and you have to pass the departmental examination meant for.

TRANSFERS TA (CBIC)
There are 2 types of transfers available in this department.
1. Annual General Transfer
2. Inter Charge Transfer
Transfer is possible but it’s not too certain or easy thing to happen. There are number of points which must be in your favor simultaneously like
1. There must be vacancies in the zone you want to get transferred into.
2. Completion of probation period of 2 years is a must for the ICT transfer.
3. Administration of both the zones must be cooperative and liberal.
RULES OF INTER COMMISSIONERATE TRANSFER (ICT) FOR THIS POST
But ICT for Group-B service such as Examiner, Preventive Officer, GST/Excise Inspector in CBIC/CBEC have been banned now.

NOTE-I: TA (Customs) can apply only for promotion for PO and Examiner.
NOTE-II: TA (Excise) can apply only for promotion for Excise Inspector.
AGE LIMIT
In the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam of the Staff Selection Commission for this post is 18-27 years.
NOTE-I: It being Group-C service, a central govt employees servicing for 3 years continuously can take this exam up to 40 years for this post. For reserved categories add to it the usual age relaxation available to them.
NOTE-II: COLOURBLIND Candidates can prefer this post. But if a candidate is coloublind he can’t be promoted to the post of Excise Inspector/PO/Examiner under rules.
