USAGE OF ‘TO THINK’ & ‘ACCORDING TO’ (EXPLAINED IN HINDI)

1. TO THINK 

TO THINK (THAT) एक phrase है जो अपनी हैरानी को व्यक्त करने के लिए कहा जाता है. TO THINK के पश्चात THAT का use ऐच्छिक (optional) होता है; जैसे

To think that we lived next door to him and never knew what he was doing!
= To think we lived next door to him and never knew what he was doing!

(= हम ये जानकार हैरान थे कि हम उसके साथ वाले मकान में रह रहे थे और हमें ये पता ही नहीं लगा कि वह करता क्या था.)

और उदाहरण:

a) To think (that) he lied to you!
b) To think, all we needed to do was to wait a few more days.

2. ACCORDING TO

ACCORDING TO का अर्थ है: किसी के कहे अनुसार. ACCORDING TO का use केवल किसी अन्य व्यक्ति की बात के लिए किया जाता अपनी बात के लिए. अपनी खुद के विचार हों तो हम ‘in my opinion’ अथवा ‘in our view’ आदि का use करते हैं; जैसे

a) According to Anuj, the film starts at 9.30.
b) According to the instructions, you must not write your name anywhere on the answer sheet.
c) The government, according to an opinion poll taken last week, may lose the election.

INCORRECT: According to me they are very polite.
CORRECT: In my opinion, they are very polite.

1. TO THINK

TO THINK (THAT) is a phrase which is used to show that you are very surprised or shocked about something. Use of THAT after TO THINK is optional; e.g.

To think that we lived next door to him and never knew what he was doing!
= To think we lived next door to him and never knew what he was doing!

(Means we were very surprised to know that we were living next to his house and could not even know what he was up to.)

More examples:

a) To think (that) he lied to you!
b) To think, all we needed to do was to wait a few more days.

2. ACCORDING TO

ACCORDING TO means ‘as reported by’ or ‘as stated by’. We only use ACCORDING TO when we refer to an opinion from someone else. When we talk about our own opinion, we use phrases such as ‘in my opinion’ or ‘in our view’ etc. e.g.

a) According to Anuj, the film starts at 9.30.
b) According to the instructions, you must not write your name anywhere on the answer sheet.
c) The government, according to an opinion poll taken last week, may lose the election.

INCORRECT: According to me they are very polite.
CORRECT: In my opinion, they are very polite.
