‘WHILE’ and ‘WHEREAS’ (EXPLAINED IN HINDI & ENGLISH)

WHILE और WHEREAS (EXPLAINED IN HINDI)

1. ‘While’ का use उन कथनों को व्यक्त करने के लिए किया जाता है जो किसी time से सम्बंधित होते हैं या कोई विरोधाभाष (contrast) दिखाने के लिए होते हैं जबकि ‘whereas’ का use सिर्फ विरोधाभाष दिखाने के लिए ही होता है; time के लिए नहीं; जैसे

Preeti liked tea while Sneha preferred coffee.
= Preeti liked tea whereas Sneha preferred coffee.

a) While/Whereas I like all types of fish, my girlfriend always chooses meat dishes when we go out to eat.
b) Some married couples argue all time, while/whereas others never do.

INCORRECT: Preeti did the ironing whereas Sneha swept the floor.
CORRECT: Preeti did the ironing while Sneha swept the floor.

a) I listened to music while Reema cleaned the house.
b) While I was watching a movie on the T.V., the children were playing in the other room.
c) Can you wait in the car while I wear dress to get ready?
d) While Geeta was dancing, her brother was reading.

NOTE-I: While अथवा Whilst?

Would you like something to eat while we’re waiting?
=  Would you like something to eat whilst we’re waiting?

NOTE-II: While अथवा When?

When और While दोनों का अर्थ एक समान हो सकता है; परन्तु जब कोई निश्चित समय (point in time) दे रखा हो तो सिर्फ ‘when’ का use  ही किया जा सकता है ; ‘while’ का नहीं; e.g.

The phone rang while we were having dinner.
= The phone rang when we were having dinner.

[Here While/When = जब कुछ हुआ हो उस समय के दौरान]

INCORRECT: While the phone rang, she answered it immediately.
CORRECT: When the phone rang, she answered it immediately.

INCORRECT: Always keep some change with you. It’s useful while buying a bus ticket.
CORRECT: Always keep some change with you. It’s useful when buying a bus ticket.

WHILE Vs WHEREAS (EXPLAINED IN ENGLISH)

We use ‘while’ for expressions of time or to show a contrast, but we use ‘whereas’ only to show a contrast for times; e.g.

Preeti liked tea while Sneha preferred coffee.
= Preeti liked tea whereas Sneha preferred coffee.

[These two sentences are identical in meaning, and show a contrast.]

More examples where you can use either ‘while’ or ‘whereas’:

a) While/Whereas I like all types of fish, my girlfriend always chooses meat dishes when we go out to eat.
b) Some married couples argue all time, while/whereas others never do.

INCORRECT: Preeti did the ironing whereas Sneha swept the floor.
CORRECT: Preeti did the ironing while Sneha swept the floor.

[This sentence tells us that Preeti and Sneha did these tasks simultaneously. There is no suggestion of contrast.]

More examples where you cannot use ‘whereas’:

a) I listened to music while Reema cleaned the house.
b) While I was watching a movie on the T.V., the children were playing in the other room.
c) Can you wait in the car while I wear dress to get ready?
d) While Geeta was dancing, her brother was reading.

NOTE-I: While or Whilst?

‘While’ and ‘Whilst’ mean the same when we use them as conjunctions. They both mean ‘during the time that something else happens’, or ‘in contrast with something else’. While is much more common than whilst, and whilst sounds more formal:

Would you like something to eat while we’re waiting?
=  Would you like something to eat whilst we’re waiting?

NOTE-II: While or When?

‘When’ can mean the same as ‘While’, but when a point in time is given we can only use ‘when’; not ‘while’; e.g.

Compare:
The phone rang while we were having dinner.
= The phone rang when we were having dinner.

[Here While/When = during the time something happens

INCORRECT: While the phone rang, she answered it immediately.
CORRECT: When the phone rang, she answered it immediately.

[THE PHONE RANG at a particular time; therefore you can’t use ‘while’ here.]

INCORRECT: Always keep some change with you. It’s useful while buying a bus ticket.
CORRECT: Always keep some change with you. It’s useful when buying a bus ticket.
